Crocodile

Crocodiles are recurrent enemies in the Tomb Raider series. They are a large predatory amphibious reptiles that are usually encountered in freshwater habitats such as rivers, lakes, wetlands and sometimes in brackish water and saltwater. They appear in Tomb Raider, Tomb Raider: Unfinished Business, Tomb Raider III, Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation and Tomb Raider: Anniversary.

Tactics[]

In Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider III, crocodiles can only swim or walk on land depending on where they first appear. In the first game, a few instances can be found where the player is able to drain or fill up the area with water and make the crocodiles switch their moving behavior.

In the original Tomb Raider, despite if they are encountered on dry land, crocodiles are notably fast, even being able to outrun Lara. They are not too resilient, though, and just a few well placed shots with the pistols should be enough to put them down. Like most enemies, they can be safely dispatched by climbing on a high ledge and shooting them from it, whether they are on land or underwater. At least one or two crocodiles are found in almost every body of water encountered throughout the Greece and Egypt levels, and stop appearing afterward.

In Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, they can finally switch from swimming to walking, making them much more dangerous.

In Tomb Raider Reloaded', crocodiles are ranged enemies. They swim in water and when they pop out their head they will cause a water-wave to splash on land that Lara has to evade.

Development[]

In the original Tomb Raider, crocodiles were to appear in Peru's Lost Valley level, but were later omitted in favor of dinosaurs. In the final game, crocodiles do not appear until the following location at St. Francis' Folly.

Also in the original game, but this time in the final version, an unused crocodile (land variant) can be found in the WAD for Obelisk of Khamoon, although it isn't used in the level itself.
