Military Police

The military police are a variety of human enemies that appear in Tomb Raider III: Adventures of Lara Croft.

Types[]

Military Policemen w/ Clubs[]

These are the only military policemen that are melee-based and attack using clubs to whack Lara and other escaping prisoners with.

Military Policemen w/ Pistols[]

Armed, these military policemen can shoot at Lara from a distance while pursuing her and the other prisoners.

Military Policemen w/ Rifles[]

Probably the most dangerous of all the military policemen. They are armed with rifles equipped with laser sights for improved precision.

Military Police Workers[]

These are not faced by Lara during gameplay and instead appear only in the cutscene following High Security Compound. They are seen to close the truck's back doors after Lara has sneaked aboard it.

Tactics[]

Most of the time when Lara encounters the club-wielding military policemen, she will be unarmed. To defeat them, Lara must find a button that will release the other prisoners at the compound. Once released they will attempt to fight the policemen. If Lara is armed, it will not take long to dispose of them with her pistols.

When Lara comes up against the military policemen wielding pistols, she will often hear their footsteps or catch sight of them before they will see her. With the right timing, Lara can catch the policemen by surprise and defeat them before they can close the distance or activate lasers. Again, if Lara is unarmed, she is required to either avoid them entirely or seek assistance from her fellow prisoners.

Unlike the other types of military policemen, the rifle-wielding variety cannot usually be avoided altogether. Lara will be armed when she encounters this type so it is best for her to keep her distance, constantly moving and take cover if possible. Also the strongest of the policemen, it is best that Lara opt for a more powerful weapon to defeat them such as the shotgun at close range or the MP5 at a distance.

Development[]

There was at some stage of development another variation of military policeman in Tomb Raider III. These were to be able to defend themselves with large metal shields in addition to being armed with pistols. They would have shot at Lara through a small hole on the shield itself. The reason for their removal is unknown.

Possibly an earlier version of the pistol-wielding military policeman, or another type entirely, is the military policeman seen in early enemy renders, wielding an M-16.

The military policemen wielding clubs were also once slightly different. There are white sections at the ends of their short-sleeved shirts where there are none in the final version of the enemy.
