Secrets were a concept introduced in the first Tomb Raider game and have returned in most of the games thereafter, albeit in slightly different variations.

Usage[]

Tomb Raider[]

In the first game, secrets were often found in rooms or chambers hidden away somewhere and they took the form of a number of items that would prove useful to Lara such as medipacks and/or ammunition.

Tomb Raider: Unfinished Business[]

Like the game it is an expansion to, Tomb Raider: Unfinished Business presents secrets in the same way.

Tomb Raider II[]

For Tomb Raider II, most of the levels possessed three secrets each and took the form of small dragon statues. A Stone Dragon, a Jade Dragon and a Gold Dragon. This time, however, Lara is required to collect all three secrets in a level in order to be rewarded with useful items, as opposed to the first game where every individual secret rewarded her with something.

Tomb Raider II: Golden Mask[]

Secrets act in the same way as they did in Tomb Raider II, except that they now appear as Gold Coins, Gold Bars and Gold Skulls. Collecting all secrets in all levels rewards the player with an additional level, Nightmare in Vegas.

Tomb Raider III: Adventures of Lara Croft[]

Just like in the original Tomb Raider, the secrets in Tomb Raider III: Adventures of Lara Croft are normal items such as: medipacks, ammo and weapons. Collecting most of the secrets in the entire game rewards the player with a bonus level, All Hallows.

Tomb Raider III: The Lost Artifact[]

Like Tomb Raider III before it, secrets are found in the form of medipacks, ammunition and weapons.

Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation[]

Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation uses a combination of the games' ways of presenting secrets. For the Angkor Wat level only, secrets are found as Golden Skulls. Collecting all eight skulls will have Von Croy take the Path of the Heretical and onwards to a more difficult version of the Race for the Iris level. For the remainder of the game set in present day, secrets are presented in the same way as the first and third games.

Tomb Raider: Chronicles[]

In Tomb Raider: Chronicles, secrets appear as Golden Roses. By collecting the secrets, the player is rewarded with galleries in the special features section on the main menu screen.

Tomb Raider: Legend[]

In Tomb Raider: Legend secrets, now represented as artifacts, are used similarly used to the gold roses in TRC. They are separated into three classes: bronze, silver, and gold. Bronze artifacts unlock character and object models, Silver ones unlock concept art, and each gold artifact unlocks outfits for Lara to wear. There was a different number of bronze and silver artifacts per level, and one gold artifact in every level.
