Key items are a staple element of the Tomb Raider Series. Their obvious function is to unlock doors/areas that are inaccessible, and progress the story.

Tomb Raider Edit

Tomb Raider doesn't use traditional keys as previous timelines did. It instead opts for having items that must be given to characters, or brought to a certain location for the story to continue. With the exception of the Axe which is used to pry open doors, and the shotgun and grenade launcher which can destroy wooden and steel barriers respectively, to allow access to blocked areas.
